Welcome to the Nelson Poynter Library webpage dedicated to helping online and off-campus students with their research. The Poynter Library provides access to thousands of online books and journal artices, as well as delivery services so you can getitems that are not online. Distance Learning Services are a collaboration between three library departments — Public Services, Access Services, and Instructional Media Services.

 

Research
As a USFSP student, you have access to thousands of online books, articles, dissertations, and other types of documents. You also have access to the collections of all USF libraries as well as other state colleges and universities. The Libraries provides hundreds of databases you can use to search this content.

This guide provides basic information for accessing and searching the Library’s databases. For more specific information, see the subject guides available at http://guides.nelson.usf.edu/ResearchHome .

Searching for Books

Use the Library Catalog To find a book or periodical by title or subject. The link is also available on the Nelson Poynter Library Home Page.

The Library Catalog searches all of the libraries in the USF System. If you want to limit the results of your search to a specific library-such as USFSP–click on the USF liBRARY-St.Petersburg link in the left column of your results.

Chat & Email Reference

The Library participates in an online chat and email reference service called Ask-a-Librarian. If you need research assistance and would like the convenience of chatting online to a librarian or if you would like to submit a reference question and receive a response by email, please use this free service. Please note, during some hours your question may be answered by librarians not affiliated with USF Saint Petersburg.

The Reference Department provides research and instructional support to USF students, staff, and faculty, and to other library users. Off-campus students can receive help via phone, email, and the Ask-A Librarian Chat service. If you are able to visit the Library you may also schedule a face-to-face research session with one of the Library’s subject specialists using our Research Assistance Program (RAP).

Access Services provides access to the variety of materials and resources purchased and made available by the USF Library system. They do this for off-campus students by providing delivery services for resources that are not availabe online.

Instructional Media Services provides educational technology support for the USF St. Petersburg campus community. They operate the USF ID card center; provide audio-visual services for students, staff, and faculty; maintain and provide support for classroom technology, and maintain the library’s media collection. The staff also operates the campus’ “state-of-the-art” distance learning studio and lab.

Subject Specialists

The Poynter Library has subject specialists who can assist you with reference questions for a particular discipline. Feel free to contact the subject specialist for your area directly.
